What Is OM4 Fiber?_

OM4 is a laser-optimized multimode fiber optic cable standard that supports 100 Gb/s Ethernet up to 150 meters and 400 Gb/s up to 100 meters using MPO connectors. It is the most common fiber type used for intra-data-center connections in GPU clusters, connecting servers to top-of-rack switches and switches to aggregation layers.

Technical Details

OM4 fiber uses a 50/125 μm core/cladding diameter with laser-optimized grading for minimal modal dispersion. The effective modal bandwidth is 4700 MHz·km at 850nm wavelength. OM4 supports 10GbE up to 400m, 25GbE up to 100m, 100GbE (SR4) up to 150m, and 400GbE (SR8) up to 100m. In GPU data centers, OM4 is deployed as MPO/MTP trunk cables (typically 12 or 24 fiber) for high-density, rapid-deployment scenarios. The fiber is terminated with MPO connectors at patch panels and broken out to individual LC connections where needed. Color coding is aqua (standard) or sometimes violet to distinguish from OM3.

How Leviathan Systems Works with OM4 Fiber

Leviathan Systems installs OM4 fiber as the standard multimode option for GPU cluster networking, using MPO/MTP trunking for high-count deployments with proper bend radius management and polarity verification.
